Observation Narrative
Plot location: Low ridge 0.1 miles N of Rt. 705, ca. 0.4 miles W of Rt. 622.
Rock Types Present: Minor siltstone debris.
A dry, Quercus alba-dominated forest on infertile soils weathered from siltstone. This stand has rather impressive species-richness but lacks the nutrient-demanding species found in oak-hickory forests on diabase of this region. Hickories (particularly Carya alba and Carya ovalis) are also abundant in this stand but mostly confined to the understory. This site has been continuously forested, though disturbed by cutting and probably grazing, since before the Civil War until the present.
